Walking through your home and trying to figure out what type of compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to install as energy efficient replacements for your myriad of incandescent shapes and sizes can be daunting. A new mobile app, available for Android smartphones and soon for the iPhone, is promising to help you figure this puzzle out.
The Light Bulb Finder, according to its developer Eco Hatchery, is said to be the first of its kind to allow users to input current bulb and fixture information that can be matched with CFL replacements with the right fit and features. It also provides the cost, dollar savings, payback and environmental impact of making the switch. A wide variety of CFLs are available on the market, from twister and dome to chandelier, spots and outdoor flood lamps.
The app lets you purchase recommended bulbs directly via mobile phone or use a customized list to shop at local retailers. A variety of other app functions also exist, including getting room by room replacement guides to help know which type of bulbs to install and the ability to share energy and environmental savings on Facebook “to encourage others to save energy, money and the environment.”
Eco Hatchery added that, according to the EPA, “if every home in the U.S. replaced just one incandescent bulb with a CFL, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year and save about $600 million in annual energy costs. In addition, we would prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to the emissions of about 800,000 cars.”
