Toy giant Toys R Us has announced plans to open 21 new stores across the country that combine the Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores in either superstore or side-by-side formats. And according to the company, the stores will include a number of sustainable design features to conserve energy and reduce waste.
New and renovated stores will include a laundry list of eco-friendly characteristics including a state-of-the-art energy management system that will monitor environmental factors and adjusts temperature, lighting and CO2 levels to account for less energy consumption. Energy efficient LED lighting will also be used in store fixtures and outdoor signs to save on energy costs.
In employee and customer bathrooms, low-flow toilets, urinals and faucets will be used, along with highly efficient automatic hand dryers that use 80 percent less energy than conventional hand dryers. Toys R Us said care will also be taken to make sure organic paints and floor adhesives are used during construction to limit the amount of pollutants in the air. And front entrance ways will be equipped with a system to keep outside contaminants from coming into the store.
The new stores, the majority of which will be located in California and Texas, are expected to be completed by the end of the year. A total of 21 new stores will be added and 23 stores will be rennovated. According to the company, the transformation will also result in the creation of 1,100 jobs.
