Chicago Apartment High Rise Goes LEED

The first high-rise apartment residence to be built on the Chicago Loop in 15 years–215 West Apartments–has been awarded LEED certification.

This apartment complex, developed by Jupiter Realty, features eco-friendly design elements such as a green roof with native landscaping (to control stormwater run-off), water-saving fixtures, energy-efficient lighting systems, and natural daylighting in 75 percent of the building. Residents have easy access to public transportation, as well as bicycle storing and car-sharing opportunities.

The building features energy-efficient appliances, as well as low-VOC adhesives, sealants, paints and carpeting. During construction, more than 75 percent of wastes were diverted from the landfill.

Jupiter Realty Principal Don Smith said, in a statement, “215 West was developed to provide our residents with a living experience that integrates luxurious finishes and amenities with ecologically sensitive design.” He goes on to note that Jupiter implemented green initiatives beyond those required for LEED certification in order to enhance the sustainable and healthy living environment for 215 West residents.
