McRae Electric Buggy Set For S. America Race

An electric vehicle based on a previous gasoline model 4×2 made by McRae Buggy will compete in the South American Dakar Rally starting on January 1st, 2012.

If the Dutch car does compete in the nearly 5,600 mile race that runs through Argentina, Chile and Peru, it will be the fist electric vehicle to do so. Running from January 1st to the 15th, the buggy will undergo some strenuous conditions going over sand dunes, mud tracks, and stone roads.

The vehicle will be equipped with a 54 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a permanent-magnet motor with 90 ft-lbs of torque. Currently, the team is working on a fast-charging concept where the vehicle can reach 90% battery capacity in 15 to 30 minutes, a necessary feature if the car is attempting to race with gasoline vehicles.
