Solar Career Map Helps Job Seekers Navigate

Looking for a career in the solar industry? The new Solar Career Map website, developed by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC), is here to help.  The online tool is interactive and meant to help not only job seekers, but policy makers and instructors navigate opportunities in the solar industry.

The map is divided into four sectors: component production, system design, sales & marketing and installation/operations. By clicking on various points on the map, users can see a road map of information, skills and training pathways through the solar sector. Not every job included in the map is primarily a solar job, but each one does requires some solar-specific skills.

The tool was created by the IREC, in its role as an administrator of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Instructor Training Network. One of the objectives of the map is to help both job seekers and policy makers realize that there is a lot more to solar energy jobs than just roof-top installation.

Jobs in the solar industry are on the rise. According to recent studies, there were 100,237 Americans working in the nation’s solar industry as of August of this year. Those numbers are up 6.8 percent over the previous year. California leads the nation with more than 25,000 people working in the industry. Colorado, Arizona and Pennsylvania follow the Golden State as having the most solar jobs.
