Vodafone To Debut Low Cost Solar Powered Mobile

Vodafone has developed for its lower end range of headsets a new mobile which sports an integrated solar panel to satisfy part of its power needs. It is called the Vodafone 247 and it should be available in June in a bar-style design.

The Vodafone 247 is described by the company as being part of its line of ultra low cost handsets. It is mentioned as being an “otherwise standard device with basic voice and text features along with FM radio and a colour display.” Ubergizmo says that his phone is nothing groundbreaking but, because of the solar panel, it gets some mention because that is something “you rarely see in any phone, regardless of whether it’s a high end or low end device.”

Little else in the way of information is available on this phone, though Vodafone did mention through its spring 2010 catalog [PDF] that a few features include the fact that one hour of direct sunlight provides enough charge for 20 minutes of talk time and that this model’s screen size is 1.44-inches.
