Media mogul Ted Turner is jumping deeper into the development of renewable energy projects in the United States with news today of an alliance between him and Southern Company, a large utility company based in the Southeast. Large scale solar projects are said to be the first item on the agenda.
Southern Company said specifically it and Turner “will focus on developing and investing in large scale solar photovoltaic projects in the U.S. Southwest where solar resources are currently most efficient and in demand, with the goal of further commercializing the technology and making it more cost competitive.” Turner, said to be the largest individual landowner in North America with more than two million acres, will let some of his land potentially be used for some of these projects. Plans are also in the works for consideration of other renewable technologies.
“I’ve always been passionate about developing renewable energy, and I’m excited to join forces with Southern Company to explore our renewable energy potential,” said Ted Turner, environmentalist and owner of Turner Renewable Energy, in a statement. “Southern Company’s experience in power project development, construction and operations, and customer relations help make this a strong alliance, and I look forward to working together.”
