Solar Powers IKEA Outdoor Solar Lamps

You may have noticed those lovely IKEA solar lanterns we’ve featured recently on our Mother’s Day guide to green tech gifts. Now we bring you another off-grid lighting option, also from IKEA’s Solvinden line.

Good Clean Tech reports that the Solvinden lamp comes with three rechargeable AA batteries, a built-in LED bulb, and a small, top-mounted solar panel. These batteries take about nine hours of direct sunlight to fully recharge, and 12 hours on a cloudy day–once they do, however, you’ve got around four hours of off-grid illumination.

We think it’s interesting that the design of this lamp is so clearly reminiscent of the kind of reading lights you’d expect to find indoors next to an easy chair, but is clearly intended for outdoor use. Perhaps with a device like this we might all feel inclined to read for a while on the porch after dark.

Yours for $19.99 at IKEA.
