5 Green Cars That Sport Solar Panels [PHOTOS]

We’re all familiar with electric and hybrid vehicles, best known for their part in cutting down on gasoline use and carbon dioxide emissions. Trouble is, EVs and hybrids still need to be refueled, and the refueling process often takes the form of traditional, fossil-based energy supplies. While some EV companies are getting around this by offering solar or wind-powered charging stations, the cars can still run out of juice on the road. But what if that didn’t have to happen? What if your car, simply by driving along on a sunny afternoon, could replenish its own power?

That’s what several companies and individuals are trying to develop: the solar-powered car. In this gallery, we’ll be taking a look at some of the solar cars that people have come up with. Some are real, some are in developmental stages, and some still only exist as concept designs. Simply click on an image below to learn more about that vehicle.

Hate to say it, but current PV energy density mean that even if you cover the entire surface of the car, you’ll get enough power to run a handful of small electric motors. You CANNOT run a car off sunlight at the moment; the physics don’t work.
