It was bound to happen, and now it’s here – an electric bicycle built for two is now available to purchase for anyone looking to be a little more eco-friendly on their commute with a friend. The bike comes from the Hammacher Schlemmer company, a high-end product maker we’ve covered a few times for the innovative, but often pricey, electric vehicles they carry.
We first caught news of the new item over on the Envirogadget blog, and the specifications on the tandem bike are pretty nice when compared to other electric bicycles. The company claims this product is the first tandem electric bicycle, but we noted a company in Wisconsin already claimed the title earlier this year.
Equipped with a 500 kilowatt rear-wheel electric motor, the company says the bike has a top speed of 20 miles per hour when just using the pedal-assist motor, but that with pedaling, higher speed may be achieved. Featuring a 48 volt detachable lithium-ion battery, the bike has a range of roughly 25 miles, which is probably far enough for most tandem adventures.
As for price, well, it’s not bad compared to other electric bikes, but still hits the $3,400 mark. Of course, if you’re looking for a way to have your own e-bike on a budget, check out our DIY electric bicycle feature that notes one inventor who completed a kit at home for under $1,000.
