A British company has created a pioneering new technology that can convert air into petrol, a breakthrough which could help curb global warming.

The company, Air Fuel Synthesis, began producing the fuel in August and hopes to expand to a commercial-scale plant within two years. The company also plans to produce green aviation fuel.

Peter Harrison, CEO, Air Fuel Synthesis, told UK newspaper, the Independent: “We’ve taken carbon dioxide from air and hydrogen from water and turned these elements into petrol. There’s nobody else doing it in this country or indeed overseas as far as we know. It looks and smells like petrol but it’s a much cleaner and clearer product than petrol derived from fossil oil.”

Damian Ryan, Senior Policy Manager, The Climate Group, commented: “While there is clearly a long way to go before this technology is delivering climate friendly petrol at scale and at a commerically competitive price, it does demonstrate the kind of disruptive technologies that are being developed today that could radically alter our energy systems in the future.

“It is important to bear in mind, however, that the environmental intergrity of this synthetic petrol is largely reliant on the use of renewable energy for its production. This underscores why it is critical that the Government’s new energy reforms must create the right policy and financial environment to drive the expansion of wind, solar and marine energy generation that we need to make these kind of technologies environmentally credible and to drive down greenhouse emissions in general.

“We should be inspired by this kind of entrepreneurial leadership from the science, engineering and business communities, which shows the tremendous opportunites that come from developing a low carbon economy.”
