Around the world, huge numbers of old shipping containers languish in stock yards. Why? Because while these ubiquitous steel containers are cheap enough for use in one-way transportation, it’s not generally considered cost effective for importers to ship them back to their country of origin. (It’s actually cheaper to buy new containers from Asia.) This results in a surplus of empty shipping containers just waiting to find new life in green buildings.
Long a favorite building material of green architects and designers worldwide, shipping containers are now finding their way into a diverse range of buildings, from homes to offices and even hotels.
