From the Daily Grommet, which features products that are useful, innovative and well-crafted, comes a line of solar-charged LED yard and garden lights just in time for summer. These lights, created by Allsop Home & Garden, a father-daughter team, come in a wide range of styles, colors and sizes, from globular lights made of UV-resistant nylon fabric that won’t fade to hand-blown glass string lights in a myriad of colors.
Jim and Jamey Allsop, who describe their business as “bringing happiness to garden products,” hit center stage in the yard-care product line several years ago with a collapsible fabric wheelbarrow called the Wheel Easy. But it is the Allsop’s solar garden lights that get the lion’s share of the attention nowadays. Accordion-pleated like Japanese and Chinese paper lanterns, these round nylon lanterns fold flat for storage when not in use.
Or choose string lights, 10 per string, either white or multi-colored, for $35.99. The hand-blown multi-colored glass version of the string light set ($46) comes in a number of colors including Sea Glass, a subtle mix of blues and greens. String lights, thanks to their extra long cords, allow the solar charger to be placed at the front of a lawn away from-sunlight blocking trees and buildings, while the light globes themselves are hung nearer the house, on a deck or patio, or in a tree. And because the units are waterproof, they can be left up all year round as far away or as high as you need them to be without worrying about water damage, according to Jamey Allsop.
Allsop also makes a mosaic glass solar-powered LED light, like the kind you see on dimly lit restaurant tables. Each is six inches tall, and comes in violet, pink, blue or yellow. Or choose a Solar Tea Lantern, hand-blown glass with a warm-white LED bulb (unlike most solar lights, which use pure white or “polar white” LEDs). All lights require five to six hours of charging via a solar panel, as you might expect. And, while not as original as the solar garden light paving stones we wrote about last year, or as intriguing as the solar-powered flower lights that actually fold their petals after dark, Allsop’s Firefly solar garden light, shaped like a calla lily, is bound to draw some solar garden light aficionados.
