SunPower’s Record-Breaking Cell In Production

The key thing, the company said, is that the all-back contact solar cell cranks out more energy per square meter when compared to conventional crystalline solar cells. “The new cell has low reverse-bias breakdown voltage to deliver better performance in shady and dusty conditions, and better temperature coefficient for increased energy harvest in hot environments,” SunPower said.

Last June SunPower started selling 96-cell E20 solar panels that featured 22.4 percent efficient Maxeon cell technology.

The solar efficiency of a photovoltaic (PV) cell indicates how much of the light hitting it is converted to power. Measurements are verified and tracked by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) in several categories and subcategories depending on the architecture of and materials used in the cell.
