Preview: Green Festival NYC, April 21-22

Maybe you turned out the lights for Earth Hour last month, but you’ve got to do one better for Earth Day. Why not make it an Earth Weekend and take in all the granola goodness at the Green Festival in NYC, April 21-22?

In its 10th year, New York City’s Javits Center will be brimming with green industry players, inspiring do-it-yourselfers, and the best of everything green the big apple has to offer, including hands-on workshops and green living tips, and of course, deliciously healthy food and drinks!

Here’s what we’re excited about:

Green building is kind of a big deal here at EarthTechling, so were eager to see Justin Green and Pamela Lippe discuss trends in New York City’s green building scene at 1pm on Saturday at Stage C. These two are definitely the ones you want to hear from on this topic. Lippe has a super long list of incredible credentials including her work on the new Bank of America Tower at 1 Bryant Park, which recently achieved LEED Platinum, and her 22-year service as the executive director of Earth Day New York. Justin Green is the Founder and Director of Build It Green!NYC, New York City’s non-profit retail outlets for salvaged and surplus building materials.  They’ve got great doors, floors and cabinets for all green builders and DIYers, ambitious or otherwise.

Van Jones, the bestselling author of the Green Collar Economy, will be speaking as he has just released another book entitled, Rebuild The Dream. Jones is a senior policy advisor at Green For All, which he founded in 2007, and has been named a Hero Of The Environment by Time Magazine. After his controversial stint as the Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House, Rebuild The Dream offers both a constructive critique of the Obama era and a formidable plan to renew the American Dream. Jones will be speaking candidly for the first time about his personal journey through the halls of power Saturday at Noon on the Main Stage.

The T.H.R.E.A.D.S. Eco-Fashion Show, presented by Conscious Living TV will make its NYC Green Festival debut Saturday at 6pm on the Main Stage. The catwalk will showcase current eco-collections of some of the most talented and innovative green designers. Get set to feast our eyes on ready-to-wear styles using recycled materials, and high-end designs parading the luxurious side of renewable textiles.

On Sunday at 1pm on Stage B there will be a student panel presenting, “Student to Student, How We’re Making Our Own Schools Green, Right Now.” We’ll hear from students across the NYC School system that are starting green initiatives in every part of their school, from curriculum to gardens, rooftop to refuse. Now word yet on which schools are involved, but we’ll we watching regardless, because it’s just so inspiring to see eco-conscious kids in action.

All this run-around got you working up an appetite? Not to worry my greens, just make sure you find one of the 25 organic food booths, including Alive and Radiant Foods, and savor their organic, vegan and live-food entrees, pizzas, wraps, cakes and pies…mmmm.

These are just a few of the hundreds of thing you can get into at Green Festival NYC this year. Visit the Green Festival online to plan your Earth weekend!
