Cross Country Automotive Services has launched what it calls the first roadside assistance program for electric vehicle (EV) owners. The program offers emergency charging assistance to drivers whose batteries have gone dead. Whether’s it’s really first or not might be a matter for debate, however: As we reported, earlier this summer AAA began an emergency EV-charging service, although it did call it a pilot program. So maybe that gives Cross Country the edge.
In any case, Cross Country said it can get a stranded motorists charged and on her way in 15 minutes using specially equipped mobile charging units. The units are mounted on small trailers and include a 10-kilowatt propane-powered generator that can charge disabled electric vehicles at the Level 2 protocol.
Cross Country’s announcement – which we spotted on the Edmunds Inside Line site – will introduce the program in seven markets: Los Angeles, Phoenix, Nashville, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle. The first test case took place in Phoenix, where charge took 15 minutes and gave a driver an additional range of five miles. The company will also be adding mobile charging units to other areas throughout its national network.
The mobile charger is capable of back-to-back services, without the need to recharge any onboard batteries. The service will be available to both service providers and dealerships as a way to quickly and safely charge multiple electric vehicles.
