24 state governors, who together make up the Governors’ Wind Energy Coalition, wrote a letter to President Obama last month calling for an extension of the tax credit for wind power development to counter what they worry would be a considerable slow down of the domestic manufacturing, development and construction of wind projects without it. In such a difficult economic time, these governors contend, developing the country’s renewable energy technology is crucial for growth.
The letter outlines a few key issues that the Coalition would like to see addressed, and suggests that a task force be created to focus entirely on wind power and accomplishing wind power goals, which would involve both federal and state governments. They also ask that guidelines for wind development in relation to conservation and wildlife protection, and that offshore wind power be developed more seriously.
The Coalition is also looking at the marketing aspect of wind power, and the means of transmitting the electricity generated by wind power to homes and businesses.
Finally, the Governors’ Wind Energy Coalition asks that the federal government make any and all completed reports from the DOE available to the public immediately, as these reports would help state governors to make informed decisions about implementing technology in their states.
