Off Grid Building Slated For Downtown Sydney

The Legion House, on Castlereagh Street in central Sydney, dates from 1902, but soon, its carbon footprint will be strictly twenty-first century.

This historic property is now slated for redevelopment by Grocon and the GPT Group, which are planning to take the building entirely off the grid–a first for a commercial building of this type in Australia.

The Legion House is connected to the 161 Castlereagh Street project, a high-end office tower currently under development by Grocon for tenants ANZ and Freehills. Grocon plans to make The Legion House its corporate head office in Sydney, as well as “one of the most sustainable buildings in the world.”

Plans for the historic property include eco-friendly construction materials and methods ( including sustainable bamboo and timber), as well as water saving features such as air-cooled air-conditioning and vacuum toilets. The development will generate power both for itself and the nearby office tower via biomass gasification technology – a first for Australia.
