We just got done looking at the new, more stringent Energy Star compliance requirements last week. It looks like Samsung got that memo too and decided to make all 21 of its new 2011 LED TVs compliant with the tightened standards. In their recent announcement, Samsung goes through some new product features and points to the fact that some features previously reserved for premium models have now trickled down to their standard line-up.
The new LED TV line-up spans the size spectrum from 19 inches up to 55 inches, but the new ultra-thin bezel that Samsung is using on their premium models this year may have consumers looking at TV sizes a little differently. It certainly caught our eye. The edge on the LED D8000, D7000 and D6400 series of televisions is just .2″ and so small that it appears a 55″ panel might now fit in a space that older 50″ panels would max out. The new look appears to help the TV blend into its surroundings too but, perhaps more importantly, the green benefit to slimming down TV sizes is that it reduces packaging needs and, therefore, makes less of an environmental impact.
Samsung’s suite of built-in access to online media, which they call “Smart TV”, is now offered in seven of Samsung’s new models. Apps for accessing Netflix, Blockbuster, Hulu Plus, Facebook, Pandora and tons more online content are all available through a new interface that Samsung indicates is more straightforward and easier to use. The manufacturer also added some new intelligent search options that will aggregate locally stored and online content and lay it all out in one screen. Select models will also offer a web browser for accessing other online content and the three top of the line models offer a full QWERTY keyboard.
Some of the other slick features to grace the new line include new super-clear panels that reduce light reflections for clearer pictures in bright rooms, 2D and 3D capability, wireless DLNA networking for accessing music, pictures and video on a home network, Skype video conference capability (camera sold separately) and, one of our favorites, an “ECO Sensor” that adjusts the brightness of the display based on the ambient brightness of the room. Less brightness means less power consumption and a greener TV.
As for availability, the 21 models, ranging in price from around $250 to upwards of of $3,600, are already out on the market or will be out by May.
