Net Zero Home Comes To San Antonio

San Antonio home builder BuiltSmart Resources wanted to show just how green a San Antonio house could be, and it would appear that now, it has. The new BuiltSmart Resources Show Home and Resource Center has earned net zero status for producing as much energy as it consumes–making it the first home in San Antonio to do so–and scored a negative three on the Home Energy Rating System, placing it among the most energy efficient homes in Texas.

This is the second green “first” for BuiltSmart Resources, which was also the first home builder to achieve Build San Antonio Green’s Level 3 Solar Home certification with the completion of the Curtis & Laura Trial residence not long ago, in December of 2010.  The Show Home and Resource Center also take advantage of San Antonio’s sunny skies with a 11.28 kilowatt capacity photovoltaic solar system utilizing SCHOTT Solar’s panels. (The project also takes advantage of stormy skies with a 30,000-gallon rainwater catchment system for all domestic and landscape use.)

MSA Architecture of San Antonio designed the Resource Center in a Contemporary Hill Country style that featuring an open floor plan; it was built (of course) by BuiltSmart Resources. The building features advanced framing techniques for greater structural integrity with less material than traditional construction, Demilec spray foam insulation in the walls and under the roof to create a complete thermal envelope, and Energy Star appliances throughout.
