GE Ecomagination: PassivEnergy

What if you could save up to 18% on your energy bills simply by telling a system how you live your life? That’s the question a new home energy management tool called PassivEnergy wants to help you answer.

According to PassivSystems, the company behind this product, PassivEnergy is a professionally-installed heating and hot water management service that can help you save money at home. This system–which replaces existing controls–factors in outside temperatures, when members of your household tend to be gone from the house (or asleep) and your preferred thermostat settings to create an automated, optimized energy-saving program, tailor-made to your household and climate.

The system can be accessed via the included touch-screen PassivController, or–like many of the home energy management tools that have hit the market in recent years–via your iPhone. Additionally, the company plans to add a web portal that will allow users to both see their homes and control its heating systems wherever they happen to be.

The PassivSystem is one of many entries this year in the GE Ecomagination Challenge, which is seeking out innovative ideas for powering the homes of the future.
