Super Yacht Concept Harnesses Sun, Wind

An eco super yacht? Complete with solar sails and a retractable, futuristic wind turbine? That’s the Bloom yacht concept from Xiang Yu of the Netherlands, which seeks to make the independently wealthy a little greener while tooling around the waters of the world.

The Bloom makes use of a hybrid diesel-electric engine, which can pull energy either via traditional dinosaur juice or clean, green electricity supplied either via the boat’s sails–woven with flexible thin film solar cells–or from the wind turbine, which folds out at the touch of a button. This turbine not only supplies power, it creates a colorful show for passing boats or onlookers from the shoreline.

We’ve certainly seen some nice solar boats here at EarthTechling, but it’s nice to see a designer integrating the wind power into the renewable propulsion mix as well, as per the Tag Yachts Tang.
