Green Ideals Melt In Heat Of Summer

Did you find it hot this summer? If so, did you sacrifice being “green” in the name of comfort? If you did, you weren’t alone by a long shot. A small survey conducted in August by Honeywell, a diversified technology and manufacturing company, found that “nearly two thirds of American consumers chose comfort over cost savings and conserving energy when temperatures spiked.”

The survey, which polled 1,005 American adults, found that this summer, which is said to be one of the hottest on record, was not an easy one on the energy grid. Honeywell said that sixty percent of those polled saw their energy bills increase compared to summers past. On top of that, 30 percent of consumers who saw their bills climb said “it was well worth the higher costs to stay comfortable.”

“We all like to save money and conserve energy, but not at the expense of comfort,” said Joe Puishys, president, Honeywell Environmental Combustion and Control, in a statement. “And that makes sense because people want their homes and apartments to be as pleasant and relaxing as possible. As we transition into winter and face higher temperature set points and utility bills, it is possible for consumers to be energy conscious, save money and stay comfortable at the same time.”

    • There are so many simple things that people can do to stay comfortable. Being energy efficient does not mean being uncomfortable. Weather strips, adding insulation, and using window tint worked well for us. The window tint was the most impressive result. It cut the heat and glare coming through our windows by 50% and resulted in our AC system running much less. We purchased affordable window tint kits from SnapTint and installed them ourselves in one afternoon. Check our SnapTint’t website for more info.
