Do you think you have what it takes to speed up development of next generation electric vehicle batteries? If so, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) may have some funding to throw your way. The NREL is currently taking proposals through September 14 to create computer models to help build and improve electric drive vehicle (EDV) batteries.
The proposals submitted from companies and others will be eligible for up to $7.5 million, with a 50 percent cost share required bringing the total possible project amount up to $15 million over three years. The specific goals of this call for design tool proposals are threefold, including shortening the prototyping and manufacturing process; improving overall performance, safety, and battery life and lowering costs.
For those looking for a little more technical details on the proposals, the NREL spells out [Proposal Number RCI-0-40497] that it specifically is “seeking organizations from industry and academia to serve as subcontractors to help develop computer aided design tools for automotive batteries. The focus of the effort for these subcontracts is to develop multi-physics simulation models capturing realistic three-dimensional geometries and configurations of cell level and pack level of batteries or other energy storage devices that could meet the requirements of electric drive vehicles. The models need to address electrochemical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, electrical, and/or structural physics in cells and battery packs.”
