Porsche is certainly not a new face on the green car scene, but electric vehicles in its stable up to this point have been pretty much a no show (unless you count after market conversions like this electric Boxster). This is why it is nice to see the luxury auto brand committing more to EVs with an announcement today it is stepping up its research on electric sports cars.
Porsche said it has developed and is testing three experimental, all-electric-drive Boxsters. Though the company was not forthcoming in technical details on these vehicles, it did say that in field tests as part of the Stuttgart Model Region for Electromobility, the vehicles are being driven daily to “provide insight into new electric drive components and new battery systems being developed by Porsche.” The tests will also provide further findings on the infrastructure required for electromobility, according to Porsche, and the data collected will “provide consumer insight into how future products must be designed and produced in order to meet customer expectations.”
“We will definitely be offering electric sports cars in the future,” said Michael Macht, the President and CEO of Porsche AG, in a statement. “But such a concept only makes sense if it offers performance and a cruising range comparable to that of a sports car today.”
