Belkin Showcases Four New Home Energy Management Devices

Belkin, a maker of computer accessories, last year introduced its Conserve line of energy-saving accessories via Surge with Timer power strip. The company is now expanding that line up with four new products: the Conserve Smart AV auto-off surge protector; the Conserve Valet smart charging station; the Conserve Insight energy-use monitor; and the Conserve Socket power timer. All of these products will be available in mid-July.

Belkin said that the Insight helps one monitor energy usage by showing how much devices really cost – in watts, dollars, and carbon dioxide – when those devices are plugged into its attached outlet. The Smart AV device “detects when your TV is turned on or off, and shuts down power to connected components.” As for the other two devices – the Valet and the Socket – the former serves as a place to charge up to four mobile devices and can automatically shut off when the devices are fully charged, while the Socket “automatically shuts off power after a time interval you select.

Belkin believes that with the size of the green marketplace estimated to reach $845 billion by 2015, energy management devices such as those from its Conserve line will be one or the more important categories of consumer choice. A survey the company conducted recently determined that a majority of people have a growing “awareness of and desire to reduce energy consumption,” especially when you consider that the average cost of energy wasted from home electronic entertainment devices left on but not in use is $76 per year and that 100 billion kilowatt hours of electricity are consumed in the U.S. for standby power.

“Our research shows that although people have a strong desire to minimize their impact to the earth, there haven’t yet been tools available to provide insight about their energy use,” said Mark Reynoso, CEO and President of Belkin, in a statement. “We’ve combined our strengths in understanding people’s needs with our expertise in user-centric design to bring elegant and easy-to-use energy conservation solutions such as these into the home. With these four additions to our Conserve line, Belkin is enthusiastically pursuing the emerging category of energy conservation.”
