Nations Power Uses Smart Meters To Offer Real Time Electricity Pricing

How would you like it if you could pre-pay your electricity or get real time pricing based upon your usage? That is the idea behind Nations Power, a company in Texas which is proclaiming today it “is the first electric provider to implement pre-pay with real-time pricing anywhere in the U.S.” A bold claim indeed.

Nations Power, which is rolling out this new scheme first in Texas, says its pre-paid and real-time pricing products can utilize the nearly 1,000,000 advanced smart meters currently installed in the Lone Star State. The company says this billing solution “allows customers to pre-pay for power on a daily basis versus the traditional monthly post-paid or month-ahead estimated pre-paid methods.” Pricing is said to be approximately 30-40% lower than the estimated pre-paid companies, which could turn out to be a difference for the nearly 6 million customers predicted to have smart meters in Texas by 2013.

“We are the first provider to offer pre-paid billing with real-time pricing, anywhere,” said Fernando de Agüero, CEO of Nations Power, in a statement. “Our one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art software was developed exclusively for Nations Power, by SmartGridCIS, to provide pre-paid electricity to our customers. The software processes 15-minute usage data from any smart meter, which allows us to provide pre-paid electricity with real-time pricing.”
