It sounds like an oxymoron: a green parking garage? (After all, aren’t cars the problem?) But that’s the news from the Greenscape Capital Group, which has announced that it has will soon sign a deal making it the owner of “the world’s greenest parking facility,” according to a statement, located at the Denver International Airport (DIA), called Green Park DIA.
Construction for the 4200-slot parking garage will be based on LEED GOLD building principles, while incorporating alternatively fuelled shuttle vans, solar and wind energy sources, porous pavement, natural landscaping, and geothermal energy. Green Park DIA is also slated to harness landfill-produced methane gas, which it will convert to natural gas to meet its facility energy needs.
This is good news for DIA, currently the fifth busiest airport in the United States and the tenth busiest in the world, serving more than 51 million passengers annually. According to a statement, the Greenscape Capital Group hopes that Green Park DIA will offer a “showpiece green facility” for green third party parking operations throughout North America, while also serving as a corporate and environmental model for future developments at other North American airports.
