Volvo iPhone App Wants You To Commute Greener

A car company that really, truly care about your carbon footprint? That would appear to be the Volvo Group, based on the release of their new eco smartphone app, the personal CO2-counter Commute Greener, which allows users to quickly calculate the eco-impact of their transportation decisions.

Commute Greener is accessed through a mobile phone or a website, enabling the user to quickly assess how much carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced or increased by using, for example, the bus, car, car pooling or bike to reach their destination.  The service also provides an online community for CO2 foot-print cutting competitions between colleagues, friends and family members. Volvo´s home town, the City of Göteborg in Sweden, is the first city in the world to order the service for its 20,000 employees; a great start for the app, as tests have shown that individuals can cut their emissions by more than 30 percent using Commute Greener, according to a statement from Volvo.

Individuals using the iPhone can download Commute Greener as an application at the iPhone App Store. To download the application for other mobile phones, a city, company or organization has to order access to the application first.
