The Electric Vehicle Gets Cute In the New E’mo

There are all kinds of cool designs when it comes to electric vehicles these days, but the new E’mo from StauffacherBenz of Germany may wind up being a green version of the Love Bug: an electric car cute enough to stop traffic, and affordable enough to appeal to the masses.

With an exterior that looks a bit like a ragtop golf cart,  the lightweight three-seater runs on lithium-ion batteries good for about 60 miles per charge and can run at speeds up to 80 miles per hour; the battery pack can be augmented according to need to extend the range of the vehicle. The concept behind the name, according to the product website, is equal parts electric motion, efficient mobility and “emotion,” with central concerns of the design being optimal energy efficiency and practicality for everyday use.

A release date has not been announced, but the company aims to have the E’mo on the market in the spring of 2010.  The vehicle will sell for 15,000 Swiss francs (US$15,000.)
